Kai Michelsen was born in 1967 in Hameln (Germany), grew up in Lüneburg and studied Political Sciences in Marburg. He graduated 1996 with a Diploma (Dipl.-Pol.) at the University of Marburg and worked as a researcher at the Institute for Medical Sociology at the University of Frankfurt where he received his degree as Dr. rer. med. in 2002.

After working in the Department of Nursing and Health at the University of Applied Sciences in Fulda and at the Institute of Public Health North-Rhine Westphalia he started to work as a researcher and now as an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Health at Maastricht University in 2009.

Kai Michelsen was and is involved in the EU-funded projects PIA PHR, EUREGIO II and EUREGIO III. He collected experiences in teaching at a couple of Universities of Applied Sciences. His major interests in research are the implications of European integration on health policies and health systems.
